12 Saudi military killed in helicopter crash in Yemen

The Saudi-led "Arab Alliance" announced that 12 Saudi soldiers, including senior officers, were killed in a military helicopter crash in Yemen.

The coalition said the helicopter, a Blackhawk American-made crashed in the province of Marib to the east of the Yemeni capital Sanaa.

The official Saudi Press Agency, for its part, said the cause of the helicopter crash was still unknown and the investigation was under way.

The Arab Alliance is fighting to support the internationally recognized government of Yemen against the Huthi rebels and their allies two years ago.

The Houthis announced last month that they had shot down a Saudi Apache combat helicopter near the Red Sea port of Hodeidah they control.

More than 7,600 Yemenis have been killed and 42,000 wounded since the fighting broke out, most of them as a result of air strikes by the Saudi-led "coalition" which supports Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who was forced to flee Sanaa in February 2015.

The war and the blockade imposed by the coalition led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with 70 percent of Yemenis needing urgent humanitarian aid.-
